Family portraits in Asheville

Big families, and kids with mom and dad.

Family sessions are directed the same way as the professional work: calm, specific, nobody has to perform. That includes kids with mom and dad, multi-generation groups, and the households that will not all fit on a studio stool.

In short: Steve photographs the parents first, then adds the kids when they are ready, so no one has to fake a smile. The photos on this page show parents only; family photos with children stay private.

Kids with mom and dad

The session is paced for children. Adults are placed first, then kids come in when the room is already easy. No one is asked to freeze a grin.

Big families and extra generations

Grandparents, siblings, the people who flew in. Groups are built in layers so the full household is in the file without a stiff lineup against a wall.

The same calm direction

Steve does not run a chaotic family mill. The work is planned, the lighting is simple, and the expressions are waited for — the same method used for professional portraits.

The work that applies

Frames tagged for this session, not a dump of every portrait on the site.

The public gallery does not yet include child group frames. What you see here are the portraits that do apply: mom and dad as a couple, and parent- and grandparent-age stills. Sessions themselves include children and the whole household — those files live with the families who booked them.

How the session runs

Planned around the final use, then directed in the room.

01

Who needs to be in the frame

Kids with parents only, or the larger household. Location is chosen for space and light: studio, a lawn, or a lake edge when the group is large.

02

Shoot the adults, then add kids

Mom and dad (or the pairing in the household) get a few stills first. Children join when they are ready. Grandparents are never left as an afterthought.

03

A set the family will actually print

A full group, a parents frame, and closer stills. Proofs (the unretouched frames you review after the session) are chosen for the wall and the people who were there, not for a pose catalog.

Before you book

Practical answers for this session type.

Do you photograph families and kids in Asheville?

Yes. Sessions for kids with mom and dad, larger households, and multi-generation groups. The public gallery currently shows the parents and couple side of that work.

Will the kids have to pose?

No. Adults are placed, then children come in. Steve waits for real expressions instead of asking anyone to hold a smile.

Can grandparents be in the same session?

Yes. Big-family visits are planned so extra generations are in the group frames and also get a few stills of their own.
